When KAWS hinted at a “new chapter” since moving on from fashion, I think it’s safe to say no-one saw this coming. To celebrate MTV’s move towards becoming a televised live event this year and its new digs in Brooklyn. They enlisted Brooklyn native and graffiteur-cum-artist KAWS to redesign the infamous MTV Moonman.
All shiny and new in gunmetal with Companion‘s signature features, standing at 13 inches tall and retaining it’s spaceman roots. This is the first time ‘Moonman’ has been redesigned since its creation back in the eighties. About Companion’s new adventure KAWS had this to say;
“Companion winds up in things I never imagined, I kind of made it on a whim, and he just keeps coming back… It’s such a strong, iconic thing [the original Moonman]. Everyone sees the Moonman and knows right off the bat what it is. When I was first invited to do the project, I knew that I didn’t want to create something new entirely, I wanted [to do] something you see that’s immediately KAWS and immediately Moonman; people just get it.”
Also designing the set stage for the MTV awards you can catch it all on August the 25th.
