ICYMI, Azealia Banks finally released her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste last week, two years in the making and following a lot of personal and professional drama. Now on the promo trail for the album – which has received unanimously rave reviews, btw – we can expect to see more of her in the media for the right reasons…but this doesn’t mean that we can expect her to come correct at any point.
Speaking with The Guardian, the Harlem rapper reveals that she was very unhappy during that time, having broken up with her 45-year-old boyfriend (she was 19 at the time) and she took it out on the internet. “My first two years doing music was hard, because I was dealing with so much in my love life. I didn’t enjoy it, and you could see it. I was always on Twitter, arguing. I wasn’t happy.”
She’s happy now, though, and feels a lot better about delving into the many, many IRL and URL altercations she has gotten into with various personalities. In all fairness, it’s not like she’s actually igniting any new beef. She’s just elaborating on those that we have already been witness to and, let’s face it, even when you’re in a ‘good space’, discussing the motivation behind why you called someone a ‘faggot’ isn’t going to make for light reading. So, for the record:
“I want to punch one of them in the face – the little one [possibly Guy Lawrence]. The ugly one. I want to hit him so bad. I saw him at the airport in Australia and I came over to him and I was like: ‘Hello? Like, what are we going to do with this song?’ And he was just being a dickhead. I started crying, I was so angry. I wanted to hit him. I cannot stand that little boy with all those pimples around his mouth. I love their music, though.”
On Iggy Azalea
“Nobody’s going to go to Nobu and have a McDonald’s.”
On her use of the term ‘faggot’
“A faggot is anybody that hates women…Listen, I didn’t say all gay men are faggots; I said Perez Hilton is a faggot, so don’t try and bring the rest of the gays down with your faggotry.”
