If you thought you might be able to grab a drink or a gig at St Kilda institution The Espy this summer, think again. The venue, which has been closed since May for renovations, has encountered a hurdle with its building permits, which will delay opening for at least a few months—keeping the doors shut over the busy summer period. According to the Herald Sunthe property’s owners had a permit for internal renovations and have received 26 objections from local residents to their plans to build a rooftop terrace. Local residents are concerned about noise complaints and the potential for increased drunken behaviour in the area, should the full renovations take place. Mayor Amanda Stevens said whatever decision the council makes, both parties would still be able to appeal through VCAT and potentially prolong the completion of the works even more.

This wouldn’t be the first time the area has seen drama surrounding live music events, with the recent Listen Out festival copping a lot of flack from punters due to low sound levels. Organisers of the festival sighted local council restrictions for this.
